Model Mediated Course and Research Environments in Higher Education on the Cloud

Abstract - Autonomous model system is in the center of engineering activities at leading industries. This model system replaced document and visual centered engineering activities. In other words, document and visual based multimedia has been replaced by models. Any communication between engineers and engineers and objects are done through model. Model has the capability to modify itself as result of any outside or inside change using active knowledge drive and organized simulations. Recently, these models are capable of supporting research, have advanced learning capabilities, and evaluate any human intervention attempt to accept, reject or correct it. Models increasingly serve autonomous situation recognition. Cloud configured engineering modeling platform provides capabilities to configure projects with participants from all over the world. The above new scenario and more than twenty years experience at teaching and research using modeling laboratories motivated the researchers at Doctoral School of Applied Informatics and Applied Mathematics (Obuda University) to elaborate a concept of organizing PhD research project and MSc course environments in engineering modeling platform utilizing high tech model mediated activities. For this purpose, the Laboratory of Intelligent Engineering Systems joined to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform for Academia on the Cloud program of Dassault Systemes. This paper summarizes the characteristics of engineering models which pose new challenges at the same time provide new possibilities for university processes. Following this, the concept of model-mediated and model-centered university research and teaching is discussed then structure and operation of course and research projects are introduced. Situation awareness based communication between autonomous model and cyber physical system and human is emphasized as one of the most important trends for the future having impact on higher education. Finally, issues for realization of the concept are concluded. The proposed scenario can be considered as future advanced form of virtual university and can be applied in much more wide area as education in engineering.
