Abstract:
Educators teach the notion of melody in a variety of music courses from analytical, historical, and performative perspectives. This research presents an alternative methodology of how students can comprehend the melodic aspect of musical composition through the integration of music theory and mathematics in Chopin's Etude Op. 25 No. 2 in F minor. Appropriate for students who are well versed in music analysis, this innovative pedagogy allows one to subdivide a musical line and analyze each segment separately while focusing on voice leading and motivic direction of each segment. Analytically, the results allow one to trace a particular set of melodic patterns and dissect Chopin's compositional ap- proaches. Pianistically, the results can help achieve a well-balanced musical interpretation. Pedagogically, the proposed analytical system for viewing the work generates a project-based educational environment in the classroom.
